First graduation ceremony for “Navigation Scheme for Young Persons in Care Services”

Since November 2015, Lingnan University’s Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies has been cooperating with Lingnan Institute of Further Education (LIFE) and Haven of Hope Christian Service (HOHCS) for the “Navigation Scheme for Young Persons in Care Services”.  While so far the programme already has four intakes of students, its first graduation ceremony was held on 26 August.

Ms Pang Kit-ling, Assistant Director (Elderly Branch) of Social Welfare Department attended the ceremony and presented awards together with other officiating guests including Prof Joshua Mok Ka-ho, Vice-President and Director of Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies of Lingnan University, Ms Leung Man-ying, President of Haven of Hope Professional Training Institute and Ms Siu Sau-yin, Associate Director of LIFE.  This year, there were 19 graduates and three of them obtained excellent student awards.

In his speech, Prof Mok pointed out that with the rapid ageing of the Hong Kong population, elderly care services encounter issues such as shortage of manpower and ageing.  The “Navigation Scheme for Young Persons in Care Services” was financially supported by the Social Welfare Department, which provides job opportunities and on-the-job training for young people who want to develop a career in nursing care.  Lingnan is glad to co-operate with HOHCS to nurture talents for the industry and help young people move up the social ladder.  Ms Leung praised the students of becoming more mature after the two-year training and encouraged them to pursue future studies so as to broaden their horizon.

At the ceremony, graduate representatives shared their experience gained from the programme, who expressed that although it was challenging to accommodate studies and work at the same time, it can be resolved by effective allocation of time.  The most important thing is that they can apply the knowledge learnt in class to their practical work, so that they can handle job duties more efficiently.
