2017-18 “Concerts@Lingnan” Series: Opening Event

The opening event of the 2017-18 “Concerts@Lingnan” series was presented by the Wong Bing Lai Music and Performing Arts Unit on 26 September.  The series has been part of the University’s initiatives to enrich the music culture on campus.  To enhance liberal arts education for students, Lingnan will continue to offer various performing arts events and to expand course offerings in arts-related subjects.

The performance titled “The Moods and Emotions through Indian Kathak Dance” was held at Chan Tak Tai Auditorium.  The internationally-renowned Indian Kathak dancer Smt. Sunayana Hazarilal and her musical team, including Somnath Mishra, Kalinath Mishra and Alka Gujar brought the virtuosity and dexterity of Kathak dance movement and music to over 500 students, staff and community members.  The event was honoured by the presence of the Consul-General of India to Hong Kong SAR, Mr Puneet Agrawal, and leaders of the Sri Shakti Academy.

Students were given a chance to experience Kathak dance and music in a workshop as well.  Smt. Hazarilal and her musical group demonstrated unique Kathak features and explained the background of Kathak.  Students learned the basic dance foot patterns and tried playing the traditional Indian musical instruments.
