Lingnan Arts Festival features variety of international and local arts

The Lingnan Arts Festival 2018, an annual gala of arts and cultural activities, will be held from 1 to 27 March on Lingnan campus.  Members of the Lingnan community and the general public are welcome to attend and participate in a broad spectrum of programmes which feature a variety of performing arts as well as films, fine arts, and creative writing.

The Arts Festival will open with a drama performance Women in Red by Ms Lai Yan-chi, a renowned local actor, filmmaker and theatre director, on 8 March.  Women in Red consists of eight real-life women stories.  It ran at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in 2014 and the International Community Arts Festival in Holland last year.  A pre-performance talk will be held on 1 March.

The Performances@Lingnan series launches a wide range of remarkable performances which will run throughout the festival.  Mr Eduardo Tami, an Argentinian musician, will present Tango Music by flute and different instrumental combinations with The Music Circles.  A percussion performance by the HKYFG Hong Kong Youth Percussion will feature percussion instruments from different cultures and even eco-friendly recyclable instruments.  The Hong Kong Dance Company will present a showcase of Chinese dances, exploring the national spirit they express.  A concert by Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, showcasing various local Hong Kong composers and musicians, will feature the unique charm of Chinese instrumental ensemble music genre which is “Small but Elegant, Simple yet Refined”.

In addition to performances, this year’s festival provides the opportunity for interactive learning with practicing professionals.  Ms Li Zishu, Lingnan University’s Writer-in-Residence and Ms Lantian D., Lingnan University’s Artist-in-Residence will present seminars on creative writing and the fine arts respectively.

The theme of this year’s film series is “Sustainability and Society”.  Two documentaries, Plastic China and A Plastic Ocean will depict the global environmental issue of plastic waste.

The Arts Festival will close with an English drama, a staged interpretation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm.  It will be presented by a group of Lingnan’s Contemporary English Studies students under the guidance of expert directors.
