Visiting Science Scholar Seminar Series 2018

The Core Curriculum and General Education Office and Science Unit launched the Visiting Science Scholar Seminar Series 2018 with two seminars held in March, namely “Species Diversity in the Yangtze River Basin” on 1 March and “Inspiration of AlphaGo – Machine Learning: From Efficiency to Intelligence” on 8 March.  Both seminars attracted a full house attendance with a total of 100 participants including Lingnan staff and students, as well as secondary school teachers.

 

Prof Shu Fengyue, Professor of the College of Life Sciences of the Qufu Normal University shared about the unique ecosystem of the Yangtze River Basin and the negative impact brought by human activities.  Dr Zhang Kun, Assistant Professor of the Department of Philosophy of the Carnegie Mellon University, introduced the basic concepts and applications of machine learning.  Audience in both seminars were impressed by the intriguing stories told and the various case studies and demonstrations shown.
