Lingnan University Received HK$2M Donations From Lam Woo & Co Ltd

Lingnan University ("Lingnan" or "the University") received HK$2 million donations from Mr Timothy LAM, Director of Lam Woo & Co Ltd. The funding was donated by Mr Lam in the name of his Company for the setting up of the University's Chair Professorship named "Lam Woo & Co Ltd Chair Professorship of Sociology". Half of the donation amount, ie. HK$1 million will be matched dollar-to-dollar under the Matching Grant Scheme by the University Grants Committee, which made the donations received by the University totaled at HK$3 million.

In recognition to Mr Lam's generous support, a cheque presentation of the donation for the "Lam Woo & Co Ltd Chair Professorship of Sociology" was held today. The two directors Mr Benjamin LAM (Mr Timothy Lam's brother) and Mr Timothy Jr LAM (Mr Timothy Lam's son) presented the cheque to Professor Edward CHEN, President of Lingnan University.

Speaking at the Cheque Presentation Ceremony of the Lam Woo & Co Ltd Chair Professorship of Sociology, President Chen expressed his deep appreciation to Mr Lam for his generous and continuous support to the University. The Lam family donated to Lingnan for building two student hostels, named Lam Woo Hostel (Hostel D), Chung Shun Hall and Yee Min Hall (Hostel C). Now the Lam family donated HK$2 million and set up "Chair Professorship of Sociology, I am thankful for their support towards the liberal arts education of Lingnan.

Professor David PHILLIPS, Academic Dean (Humanities and Social Sciences) of Lingnan, said in the ceremony that he would like to express his gratitude towards the Lam family on behalf of the Social Sciences Programme. There is a wide range of academic arena provided by this programme, which includes classical theory, social policy, ageing, economics and political science, etc. Sociology is the forefront of the above. The donation from Mr Lam in the establishment of the Chair Professorship would certainly help the further development of the Department. Professor Phillips added there would not be better ways to reward the donors by excelling in performance in teaching as well in research and he was pleased to update the outstanding achievements by the University in the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) where Lingnan excelled in all panels, with Sociology scoring 80.36% against a sector-wide average of 75.16%
