12 Jun 2008

Lingnan University (LU) welcomed the government's announcement today (12 June 2008) of the appointment of the Hon Bernard Charnwut Chan to succeed Dr the Hon Leung Chun-ying as Chairman of the Council of LU, when Mr Leung's term of office ends on 21st October 2008.

Mr Leung has been LU's Council Chairman for the past nine years since 1999, a crucial year when LU acquired university status.  Since then, Mr Leung has been pivotal in guiding LU during its many important stages of development to become a fine liberal arts university as it is today.  "Lingnan is grateful to Mr Leung for his outstanding leadership to LU in the past decade, " said LU President Professor CHAN Yuk-Shee.

Mr Chan has been a member of LU's Court and Council since 1999.  During these years, Mr Chan has taken up responsible positions including Council Treasurer for three years from 2001 to 2004, and as Deputy Council Chairman since 2004.  Mr Chan also chairs the Council's fund-raising committee.  "We are most appreciative of Mr Chan's strong commitment and leadership to LU.  We look forward to Mr Chan's continued leadership as Council Chairman when he succeeds Mr Leung in October," said President Chan.
