“Walking with Lingnanians” Fundraising Walkathon 2012

Today more than 800 students, alumni, teachers, staff and friends of Lingnan University participated in the third “Walking with Lingnanians” fundraising walkathon 2012. As the opening event of “Lingnan University Week 2012”, an annual array of activities of the University, the walkathon this year started from Sha Tin Town Hall Plaza and proceeded along Shing Mun River. Around HK$1.3 million was raised in support of the University’s whole-person development programmes.

Officiating guests of the kick-off ceremony included Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, SBS, JP, Secretary for Education, Government of HKSAR; The Hon Bernard Charnwut Chan, GBS, JP, Chairman of the University Council; Mr Ben Wong Chung-mat, MH, JP, Treasurer of the University Council; Mr Patrick Ma Ching-hang, JP, Chairman of the University Institutional Advancement Committee and President Chan Yuk-Shee.

Mr Bernard Chan said, “This year, we have moved to Shing Mun River, Sha Tin, New Territories East, which lets the University to get closer to the public and the community, so that they can learn more about our liberal arts education.” He looked forward to organising the Fundraising Walkathon in all 18 districts, so that Lingnanians will leave their footprints all over Hong Kong!

President Chan Yuk-Shee thanked Mr Ng for his participation. He took this opportunity to report that during the double cohort year, the University’s development in various aspects have gone on the right track. He encouraged the four-year students to adapt quickly to university life, as well as to face up to the challenges they may come across. He also thanked Mr Kwan Chi-sun, Mr Sam Chien-man, Mr Irons Sze, JP and Mr Ben Wong Chung-mat as diamond sponsors, as well as Four Seas Mercantile Holding Limited, PARKnSHOP and Nestle Hong Kong Limited as supporting organisations of the fundraising walkathon. This is the third time that Four Seas Mercantile Holding Limited has supported the event.

Under the Sixth Matching Grant Scheme, every dollar raised from the Walkathon will be counted in Lingnan’s application for matching grants on a dollar-for-dollar basis, creating double benefits for the University.

Awards were presented to top individual and team fundraisers as well as the team with the highest number of participants:
