Lingnan University welcomes 12,000 visitors on Information Day

Lingnan University today welcomed over 12,000 visitors, mostly senior secondary students who will sit for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education in 2013 and their parents at the Information Day 2012. The Faculties of Arts, Business and Social Sciences held briefing sessions on their respective admission requirements and curricular structures in 2013/14.

Various academic departments set up booths to introduce their features and organised seminars for the visitors. The Department of Cultural Studies held a seminar on “Open the Black Box of Schooling: Beyond Anti-Brainwashing", in which Dr Ip Iam-chong, Ms Hong Chui-ngan, alumnus of Cultural Studies and Mr Wong Chi-fung, Joshua, convenor of Scholarism, were invited to discuss the current education policy in Hong Kong. Prof Ho Lok-sang, Department of Economics, spoke on “Economics of Life”, Prof Chen Hon-fai, Department of Sociology and Social Policy, talked about “I buy therefore I am? Consumer Culture from a Sociological Perspective”, and Prof Wong Yiu-chung, Department of Political Science, explained “What is Political Science and its Uses in Daily Life”, respectively. Dr Wei Yan, Vivien, Department of Chinese, gave a lecture on “Sherlock Holmes in China – A Short Talk on Detective Fiction and Modern Chinese Literature”.

Administrative and supporting units such as the Office of Service-Learning, Office of Mainland & International Programmes, Information Technology Services Centre and the library provided the visitors with an overview of their respective programmes and service offerings, showcasing the colourful campus life at Lingnan.

Meanwhile, the University hosted the 16th Jackie Chan Challenge Cup Inter-collegiate Invitation Tournament, an annual sports gala in which athletes from all local tertiary institutions flexed their muscles for glory and honour. All tournaments have now been completed and Dr Jackie Chan and Sir David Akers-Jones were invited to present the prizes.
