Lingnan University business students team win championship in KPMG Business Administration Paper Contest

A team of four business students from Lingnan University was shortlisted as one of the finalists at the Grand Final of the “KPMG Business Administration Paper Contest 2014” held on 4 January, and grabbed the championship with their innovation, outstanding performance and confidence.

The annual “KPMG Business Administration Paper Contest 2014”, organised by The Hong Kong Federation of Business Students, aims to foster interflow of creative ideas between the academic field and business field, recognise the high quality work from business undergraduates, and ultimately enhance their knowledge of the real business environment.

The competition this year was participated by more than 300 teams from nine Hong Kong tertiary institutions and 12 universities in the Asian Pacific Region. The teams went through stages of assessments including the First Round and Semi Final, and five local and overseas teams entered the Grand Final on 4 January. The finalists introduced their business papers and recommended business strategies to the panel of judges by delivering an oral presentation.

Members of the winning team include Yvonne Chan Sze-wan (Accounting, Year 3), Branting Lai Kwong-yu (Finance, Year 3), Wing Mak Wing-mui (Marketing, Year 3) and Henry Poon Sing-yu (Accounting, Year 2). Their winning paper pointed to the increasing frequency of serious flooding disasters all over the world as a result of global warming, and proposed to develop a rescue and transportation vehicle called “Spinosaurus” that can travel in water to meet the need in overcoming the arduous conditions of disaster areas, and conducting effective and swift rescue missions.

One of the team members Branting Lai was also honoured with the Best Presenter award and the Top 20 Bloomberg Aptitude Test Performer Award. The team is selected to represent KPMG China to join the KPMG International Case Competition to be held in Dubai in mid-April 2015.

Prof Esther Li Ling-yee, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Marketing and International Business and Prof Agnes Lo Wai-yee, Associate Professor, Department of Accountancy of Lingnan University, who have devoted much effort in coaching the team, pointed out that the winning team has participated in a number of open competitions on business strategies over the past two years, in which members made substantial progress and developed excellent teamwork through practice and exposure to a competitive environment. Furthermore, the entrepreneurship spirit and skill-sets acquired by the students during their studies from the Creativity and Innovation Cluster Courses helped a lot in equipping them to become future business leaders.
