15 Oct 2015

To equip Risk and Insurance Management (RIM) undergraduate students with better industry exposure and enhance their relevant skill-sets for future career challenges, Lingnan University kicked off the AR Mentorship Programme 2015-16 yesterday (14 October) with strong support from the insurance industry.

Hong Kong’s insurance industry is a sector of the economy with robust momentum of development.  Hong Kong has one of the most developed insurance markets in the region, and has attracted many of the world’s top insurance companies.  According to the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance’s provisional statistics for the first half of 2015, Hong Kong’s total gross premiums increased 13.6% year-on-year to HK$184.9 billion, representing 16.2% of the city’s GDP.  Adding the huge market potential in the Mainland, promising career prospect is available for graduates of Lingnan University’s RIM programme.

Lingnan University has partnered closely with the industry in promoting and enhancing its RIM programme.  One of the initiatives is the AR Mentorship Programme launched by the University’s Department of Finance and Insurance and supported by the AR Charitable Foundation Scholarship Scheme.  Entering its second year, the Programme enables students to understand the operation of the RIM industry and develop relevant work skills to fulfill the requirements of employers in the industry.  It also facilitates students’ career planning and preparation for joining the insurance industry, and develops their self-motivation to communicate with insurance professionals and explore opportunities in the industry.

At the Programme’s kick-off ceremony, Prof Leonard K Cheng, President of Lingnan University thanked the AR Charitable Foundation for its generous support to the Mentorship Programme, under which RIM students have a great chance to link up with experts in the insurance profession.  “I am very grateful to see that our RIM students receive great support from many professionals in the insurance field.  I strongly believe this Mentorship Programme is one of the paths for our RIM students to realize their potentials and professional dreams,” said President Cheng.

During the one-year mentoring period in 2015-2016, 21 RIM student mentees from Lingnan University will be involved in a diverse range of professional development and career counseling activities in insurance including sharing sessions, guest talks, career training workshops and recruitment talks.

Eight experts and senior executives in the insurance sector from renowned companies and organisations such as AIA International Ltd, Aon Risk Solutions, AR Consultants Services (Hong Kong), Blue Cross (Asia-Pacific) Insurance Ltd and Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Hong Kong will participate in the programme as mentors.

Currently Lingnan University’s RIM programme is offered as a stream in the BBA (Hons) Programme.  To further enhance the programme, starting from the 2016-17 intake,  a distinct Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) Risk and Insurance Management Programme will be offered which can be applied through JUPAS directly.  Under the new programme arrangement, students will be able to receive personal development advice related to risk and insurance management, including participation in the AR Mentorship Programme in their first year of study, thus offering more structured professional training and development for RIM students.
