Lingnan co-organises the 4th Conference of Higher Education Research Association

The 4th Higher Education Research Association Conference co-organised by Lingnan University and The University of Hong Kong was held on 27 and 28 May.  The conference, with the theme “Equity, Employment, and Mobility in Asian Higher Education”, attracted researchers from Germany, Singapore, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Mainland China and Hong Kong to share their latest observations and valuable insights on higher education development.
 
In his welcoming remarks at the Conference on 27 May, President Leonard Cheng said that Lingnan University embraces international cooperation and it is great to work with HKU in co-organising the Conference.  He also mentioned the recent collaboration among Lingnan, University College London (UCL) Institute of Education and other international partners to co-found the Centre for Global Higher Education in London.
 
Prof Joshua Mok Ka-ho, Vice-President and Chair Professor of Comparative Policy was invited to give a presentation entitled “The Quest for Asia World-class University Status: Implications for Sustainable Development of Asian Universities”.  He also chaired a session on “Governance of Global Excellence Initiatives”.  Prof Cheng Kai-ming, Emeritus Professor of The University of Hong Kong delivered a keynote speech on “Do We Know What We Are Facing?: Higher Education in a Changed Society”, and Prof Akira Arimoto from Hyogo University gave another keynote speech on “The Possibility of Institutionalization of Active Learning in the Japanese Universities and Colleges”.
 
In the Conference Dinner cum Dialogue on The Role of Liberal Arts Education in Asia held on the same day, President Cheng delivered a keynote speech on “The Role of Liberal Arts Education in Asia: Lingnan University Experience”.  Mr James Lam Yat-fung, Principal of Lions College cum Chairman of Hong Kong Subsidised Secondary School Council, Prof Yang Rui from The University of Hong Kong and other guests shared their response to President Cheng’s speech and their good practices and research in education, reflecting upon future educational development.
 
At the conference on 28 May, scholars and educational experts discussed graduate employment and equity in higher education.  Prof Ulrich Teichler from the International Centre for Higher Education Research Kassel, University of Kassel, gave a keynote speech on “The Professional Relevance of Study on the Way towards a Highly Educated Society”.  A Postgraduate Research Panel was opened for students to share their research on employment and education.
