Lingnan University held the Awards Presentation Ceremony 2017 yesterday (24 April) in which a total of 493 awards and scholarships totaling over HK$12 million were presented to 317 students in recognition of their outstanding academic and personal achievements.  Mr Thomas Wu, Managing Director of Hopewell Holdings Limited was invited as the Guest of Honour of the Ceremony.

While congratulated all the scholarship recipients in his speech, Mr Thomas Wu embraced fully Lingnan University’s vision and core values, which offers a board-based, cross-disciplinary curriculum and encourages students to pursue lifelong learning and all-rounded excellence.  “As someone who has now graduated from University for quite some years, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of lifelong learning.  In this rapidly changing world, we must strive to keep an open mind and update our skills to stay current”, said Mr Wu.  He also encouraged Lingnan students to be bold to explore, but know that there is no short cut to success.

In his remarks, Prof Leonard K Cheng, President of Lingnan University thanked all donors for their unfailing support to Lingnan. “Their generous donations to Lingnan over the years have helped us achieve our vision and mission, and more importantly have demonstrated their support of our educational philosophy,” said President Cheng. He also encouraged the scholarship recipients to give back to the society and help others in need to manifest the Lingnan spirit.

This year the Most Distinguished Student of the University Award went to Miss Choi Sau-ching, a year-four student of Psychology, whilethe Dr and Mrs James Tak Wu Award for Outstanding Service (Student Award) was presented to Mr Lam King-ting, a year-three student of Philosophy in recognition of their outstanding performance and contributions to the University and the community.

In her speech, Miss Choi Sau-ching pointed out that Lingnan University provides students with many opportunities to grow, serve and reflect.  “I would not have imagined that I was able to join in different activities and services in Yunnan, Cambodia, Mauritius, Indonesia, the United States and India without the support from the Office of Service-Learning, scholarship opportunities offered by Student Services Centre, and resources from Lingnan before I entered University.  I was granted the privilege to learn different groups’ needs in various communities.  These service experiences and global exposure confirm my path towards committing myself to serve our society,” she said.  She also encouraged other fellow students to grab different opportunities and to step out of their comfort zone.  “All-rounded development, global exposure, Liberal Arts education experience are only words on paper if we as students do not actively reach out to the opportunities provided and be engaged with what’s happening across the globe.”
