“Symphony of Lingnanians” gives the 50th Anniversary Celebration a perfect conclusion

“Symphony of Lingnanians” – The Closing Ceremony of the 50th Anniversary of the Re-establishment of Lingnan University in Hong Kong was held on 2 October at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. More than one thousand guests, alumni, students, staff and friends of the University joined the ceremony to give a perfect conclusion to the golden jubilee celebration.

 

The Guest of Honour Ms Michelle LI Mei-Sheung, JP, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services of the HKSAR Government officiated the Closing Ceremony with Mr Rex AUYEUNG Pak-Kuen, Chairman of the Council, Dr David CHAN Pun, HonLLD, Chairman of Court, Prof Leonard K CHENG, President of Lingnan University, Dr LEE Shiu and Dr Jennie LEE Mui Yee-Ching, Co-chair of Lingnan University 50th Anniversary Honorary Fundraising Campaign Committee, Mr Patrick WONG Chi-Kwong, Chairman of Lingnan Education Organization Limited, Mr Alfred LEE Sheung-Fat, Vice-Chairman of Lingnan University Alumni Association (HK) Limited and Prof Joshua MOK Ka-Ho, Vice President and Chairman of the Organising Committee of the 50th Anniversary.

 

Mr Rex AUYEUNG Pak-Kuen, Chairman of the Council of Lingnan University reminded every Lingnanian that “the spirit of serving remained central to the evolving character of the University. Through harnessing the potentials of our students and extending the frontiers of research, we never ceased to apply knowledge for the benefits of society.”  He also encouraged the University “to reach beyond our core role as an educational institution and bring an even greater impact on society.”

 

Prof Leonard K CHENG, President of Lingnan University thanked all Lingnan’s stakeholders and friends who have participated in the series of celebratory events in the past year.  Furthermore, he expressed “sincere gratitude to Dr. LEE Shiu and Dr. Jennie LEE Mui Yee-Ching, Co-Chair of the 50th Anniversary Honorary Fundraising Campaign Committee” and special thanks “to our Vice-President Prof Joshua MOK, Chairman of the Organising Committee, for his leadership and dedication in making the year-long celebration a great success”.

 

At the Closing Ceremony, a number of cultural and music performances including choral performance by Lingnan University Christian Choir, dragon and lion dance performance by Lingnan Univerisity Lion Dance and Martial Art Team and the Sports Team, dancing performance by the Dancing Team of Lingnan University Alumni Association (Hong Kong) Primary School, Harmonica Orchestra performance by Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong Harmonica Orchestra, Cantonese Naamyam Singing and Instrumental Music performance by friends and disciple of the late Lingnan University Honorary Doctor NG Wing-Mui won rounds of applause. Lingnan University Choir, LUCAS, Alumni, Students of Lingnan University and Mr Andrea MARCELLI, Musician-in-residence of the University also presented the Sound of Music @ Lingnan which consisted by a series of popular songs. The finale, a Choral Performance by Mr WOO Kai-sau (WOO Fung), Lingnan University Honorary Fellow was certainly the night’s highlight.

 

The past year was the 130th Anniversary of the founding of Lingnan’s original incarnation, the Christian College in China located in Guangzhou, and the 50th anniversary of Lingnan University’s re-establishment in Hong Kong. Our alumni accumulate over 26,000 in the past five decades, who have made significant contributions to different sectors of the society.
