Lingnan scholars listed as World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford

Prof Joshua Mok Ka-ho, LU Vice-President and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies; Prof Siu Oi-ling, Lam Woo & Co Ltd Chair Professor of Applied Psychology and Head of the Department of Applied Psychology; Prof Pun Ngai, Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Cultural Studies; Prof Li Lianjiang, Professor of the School of Graduate Studies and Head of the Department of Government and International Affairs; Prof Xie Haoran, Associate Professor at the Department of Computing and Decision Sciences; Prof Dean Tjosvold, Emeritus Professor at the Department of Management; Prof Roberto Castillo Bautista, Assistant Professor of the Department of Cultural Studies; the late Prof Ray Forrest and the late Prof Michael Firth are in the World’s Top 2% Scientists released by Stanford University in the US recently.

 

The new LU members on the prestigious list of this year include:

  • Prof Pun Ngai, the first Asian winner of the prestigious C. Wright Mills Award with Made in China: Women Factory Workers in a Global Workplace in 2005, and an internationally renowned scholar of labour issues in China with numerous contributions to top-tier journals of cultural studies, China studies, labour studies, anthropology, and sociology;
  • Prof Li Lianjiang, who specialises in research works for Chinese politics, comparative politics, contentious politics, political trust, and computational social science; and
  • Prof Roberto Castillo Bautista, whose research and teaching interests are in ethnography, migration and mobility, transnationality, cultural representations and cultural politics, media representation, and Africa-China relations.

 

This recognition acknowledges the research and academic strengths of Lingnan scholars, and the impact each of the nine scholars has made on both academia and society.

 

Prof Joshua Mok has worked creatively across the academic worlds of sociology, political science, and public and social policy while building up his wide knowledge of China and the region. He is also the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Asian Public Policy (London: Routledge) and Asian Education and Development Studies (Emerald) as well as a Book Series Editor for Routledge and Springer.

 

Prof Siu Oi-ling’s research interests are in occupational health psychology, specifically occupational stress, the psychology of safety and work-life balance, as well as environmental psychology and the psychology of ageing. Prof Dean Tjosvold has published over 200 articles and 20 books on cooperation and competition, managing conflict, leadership and power; he is past President of the International Association for Conflict Management and a member of the Academy of Management’s Board of Governors. Prof Xie Haoran’s research expertise focuses on artificial intelligence, big data and educational technologies.

 

Professors Michael Firth and Ray Forrest, who passed away in 2016 and 2020 respectively, made an immeasurable contribution to Lingnan and academia as a whole, and left an enduring legacy. Prof Firth’s background was in accounting, and he published more than 200 articles, books and monographs on accounting, auditing, economics and finance. Prof Forrest’s extensive research on sociology and the political economy of the contemporary city with a particular focus on housing markets and housing policy has made him a central figure in the field.

 

Stanford’s large database adopts a composite indicator based on standardised citation metrics, including the number of citations, h-index (measuring scientific research output) and co-authorship.
