The Board of Trustees of Lingnan Foundation, led by Chairman Dr Chui L Tsang, visited Lingnan University on 7-8 December 2016. During the visit, the trustees met with the President, Vice Presidents, Associate Vice Presidents, Faculty Deans and Members, as well as staff and students from the departments such as the Office of Global Education, Office of Service-Learning and Student Services Centre to learn about the latest development of the University and the progress of sponsored programmes and future funding needs.

“Tin Ka Ping Mainland Scholars and Senior Administrators Exchange Programme 2016” was held from 13 to 17 November 2016. Mr Tin Hing Sin, Chairman of Tin Ka Ping Foundation, and Prof Leonard K Cheng, President of Lingnan University officiated at the kick-off ceremony on 14 November.
A total of 13 participants, including presidents, vice-presidents and senior administrators from Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai Normal University, Shandong University, Shandong Normal University, Renmin University of China, Beihua University, Henan University, Henan Normal University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Fudan University, Capital Normal University and Soochow University, participated in the programme. The scholars and senior administrators met with professors, students, heads and representatives of academic departments and administrative units to learn about Lingnan’s mission, distinguishing features and practice of liberal arts education in respect of curriculums, students’ development, as well as related supporting services and facilities.
The Programme is a philanthropic act of Dr Tin Ka Ping, a keen supporter of Lingnan’s liberal arts education. Since 2008, the Foundation has donated to establish “Tin Ka Ping Education Fund” in Lingnan, to finance the Programme with the aim of promoting liberal arts education in mainland China every year.
The annual “Walking with Lingnanians” Fundraising Walkathon was held on 23 October, 2016 (Sunday). Over 1,300 participants joined the Walkathon and about HK$3 million was raised in support of the University’s “First Generation University Education Fund”.
The event was honoured by the presence of Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, GBS, JP, Secretary for Labour and Welfare as the officiating guest. Participants, including students, alumni, teachers, staff and friends of Lingnan University, started the walk from the Peak Road Garden, along the Harlech Road and Lugard Road and proceeded to the Peak Tower under a festive atmosphere.

Lingnan receives generous donation from Lam Kei On Memorial Trust to establish two named Chair Professorships
Lingnan University received a generous donation of HK$10 million from the Lam Kei On Memorial Trust (the Trust) to establish two named Chair Professorships in 2016/17. The chairs shall be named to honour Mr Lam Man Tsan and Mrs Lam Wong Yiu Wah respectively. The generous donation will support scholars devoted in specific academic areas. With the Trust’s tremendous support, the University will achieve higher academic and research excellence.
Prof Tenny Lam, Representative of the Trust, accompanied by Dr Gennie Lee, presented a cheque to President Leonard Cheng on 22 October 2016.
In 2015/16, the Trust donated HK$10 million to establish the Mr Lam Man Tsan Memorial Fund which aims to support full-time undergraduate students who have financial difficulties and are the first generation in their families receiving a university education in Lingnan, with more opportunities in student exchange-in and out programmes as well as internship programmes.

The 19th and 20th Seminars for Senior Administrators from the East Guangdong Region were held from 18 to 24 September and 25 September to 1 October 2016 respectively on campus.
It was the seventh consecutive year that Lingnan University co-organised the seminar with the Federation of Hong Kong Chiu Chow Community Organizations. A total of 40 and 38 senior administrators from East Guangdong region participated in these two seminars with the themes of “Labour Affairs” and “E-commerce and Cyber Security” respectively.
The seminars were generously supported by the Federation of Hong Kong Chiu Chow Community Organisations with the aim to promote and strengthen knowledge exchange between local and Mainland senior administrators.

CITIC Pacific Limited has pledged a generous donation of HK$1 million to establish the “CITIC Pacific Faculty of Business Scholarships” and “CITIC Pacific Overseas Exchange Scholarships” respectively from 2016/17 to 2020/21. Generously supported by LEO, the 10-year “LEO Ambassadors Programme”, recognises and awards students with outstanding academic performance and social service commitment, and supports students with financial difficulties to go on exchange and enjoy on-campus hostel life. Awardees of the Programme are appointed as LEO Ambassadors. The LEO Ambassadors will help promote Lingnan’s fine traditions and uphold its noble mission of “Education for Service”.

Lingnan University established the “Jockey Club Hong Kong History Learning Programme” with the generous donation of HK$14.83 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Launching ceremony was held on 29 April 2016 (Friday) at the University’s campus. The University was honoured to have the presence of Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, Secretary for Education, Ms Irene Chan, The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Head of Charities (Communication and Engagement) and Prof Leonard K Cheng, President of Lingnan University as officiating guests.
The Jockey Club Hong Kong History Learning Programme, an unprecedented one both in nature and scope, is a three-year project to be implemented by the Hong Kong and South China Historical Research Programme of Lingnan University. Targeted at all primary and secondary school students and teachers in Hong Kong, the Programme aims to develop a set of teaching and learning resources delving into the breadth of Hong Kong history in supporting the key learning area of “Personal, Social and Humanities Education” of the primary and secondary curriculum. Meanwhile, the University will organise about 80 activities to cultivate in students and teachers a more in-depth understanding on Hong Kong’s development and changes, and educate the younger generation on ways to preserve Hong Kong’s precious history collectively as well as a sense of how to understand history.

The Inauguration Ceremony of the China Economic Research Programme cum Cheque Presentation Ceremony were held on 23 April in appreciation of the generosity of the Ho Iu Kwong Charity Foundation in donating HK$8 million to establish the China Economic Research Programme for fostering economic development of Mainland China and Hong Kong.
Officiating guests of the ceremony included Mr Ho Sai-chu, Chairman of the Ho Iu Kwong Charity Foundation, Mr Rex Auyeung Pak-kuen, Council Chairman of Lingnan University and Prof Leonard K Cheng, President of Lingnan University.
The Programme at Lingnan aims to promote studies by Mainland and Hong Kong scholars, researchers and industry members in areas such as economy, industries, finance and entrepreneurship, as well as collaborative academic research and exchange projects. In response to the changes in related policies and economic development of Mainland China and Hong Kong, academic conferences will be organised to enhance the economic development of the two places. The University has appointed Prof Wei Xiangdong, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences as Director of the Programme, while Mr Ho Sai-leung, Director of the Foundation was appointed as Honorary Director to provide valuable guidance for the Programme.

The “Lingnan University Fundraising Dinner” was held on 21 April 2016 (Thursday) at Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers with Prof Frederick Ma Si-hang, former Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the HKSAR Government and Chairman of MTR Corporation Limited as the guest speaker who delivered a talk on the topic “Opportunities and Challenges for MTR in Years Ahead”.
The Dinner was graced by the presence of the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region the Honourable C Y Leung. Well attended by over 400 guests, including event sponsors, Council and Court members, students, staff, alumni and friends of Lingnan. Over HK$3.3 million was raised in support of the “First Generation University Education Fund” which supports students who are the first generation in their families receiving university education in seizing valuable learning opportunities, and also provided a great opportunity to strengthen the connections among Lingnanians and the community.
