At this year’s Hong Kong Electronics Fair and InnoEX, Lingnan University students showcased an impressive range of ingenious solutions tailored to address pressing societal needs. Highlights included the “Echo Link” smart necklace — designed by postgraduate students to enhance elderly safety and wellbeing — alongside advanced AI projects aimed at improving medical imaging and refining customer experiences. Should I reserve a patenting budget in my project proposal?
Including a dedicated patenting budget in your project proposal is highly recommended if your research may generate novel, applicable solutions. Most funding agencies allow such expenses, and outlining an IP protection plan highlights the potential for impactful research outcomes, enhancing your proposal’s competitiveness. Allocating patenting costs within the project allows inventors to access commercialisation revenues sooner, as the university is not required to first recover these patent expenses from central funds before distributing revenue.

Extension of Chinese patent pre-examination to Hong Kong entities
The expedited pre-examination service for Chinese patent applications now extends to Hong Kong entities. Under the new cross-boundary arrangements, Hong Kong entities can apply for patent pre-examination through the Shenzhen Intellectual Property Protection Center. Upon passing pre-examination, their patent applications enter the expedited examination channel of the China Patent Office, significantly shortening the overall processing time. READ MORE

China unveils new drive to accelerate commercialisation of high-value patents
This May, the Chinese Patent Office issued a directive to boost patent commercialisation in 2025, with a strong focus on accelerating the industrialisation of high-value patents through a coordinated approach. The policy gives priority to activating university patents, supporting commercialisation among tech-driven SMEs and key sectors, and shifting focus from patent quantity to quality and impact. Through collaborative and long-term mechanisms, the directive seeks to create a more open, efficient, and sustainable ecosystem for patent commercialisation, enhancing both the market value and economic benefit of intellectual property.
