Lingnan triumphs at Silicon Valley International Inventions Festival
Lingnan won 14 awards for 13 inventions presented at the Silicon Valley International Inventions Festival 2025 (SVIIF), including 8 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and a special award - Prize of the International Federation of Inventors’ Association (IFIA). The achievements have made Lingnan the Hong Kong higher education institution that has won the highest number of total awards and gold medals at this year’s festival, and affirm Lingnan’s growing competitiveness in research and innovation on the global stage. Season of innovation: Explore Lingnan’s latest breakthroughs at key exhibitions
This October, Lingnan will showcase its latest innovations across key exhibitions. At the Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Oct 13 - 16), academics will demonstrate advanced battery technology that enhances battery performance and safety for broad applications. During InnoCarnival 2025 (Oct 18 - 26), the Lingnan Pavilion themed "Smart Healthy City" will highlight smart city concepts that leverage AI technologies to create more intelligent and efficient urban environments, improving the wellbeing of city dwellers. At the Eco Expo Asia (Oct 28 - 31), Lingnan will present green technologies focused on environmental conservation and energy efficiency, underscoring its commitment to sustainability. Is it possible to file additional patents for an invention after its initial filing?
Following an initial patent application, it is possible to file subsequent patent applications for the same invention in other jurisdictions within 12 months by claiming priority from the original filing date. In addition, filing an PCT international application can extend this priority period by up to 18 months, providing valuable time to develop and refine your global patent strategy.

Policy Address 2025 updates on IP development
The Government of the HKSAR outlined comprehensive measures to boost IP trading by enhancing IP protection, valuation, and financing. A new IP financing sandbox will be introduced in collaboration with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) to help technology sectors leverage IP assets for funding. The government will subsidise SMEs for patent valuation services. Legislative proposals related to AI technology will be introduced. These initiatives demonstrate Hong Kong’s commitment to strengthening its position as a regional IP trading hub and fostering innovation-driven economic growth.

China’s copyright sector set for major upgrades
In July, the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC) released guidelines aimed at accelerating the high-quality development of the copyright sector by 2030. The blueprint emphasises the establishment of a comprehensive legal framework, strengthened copyright governance, and an effective enforcement system. Priority is given to updating crucial regulations for the Copyright Law and for Computer Software Protection. The guidelines also address emerging areas such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, and live streaming media. Moreover, NCAC supports the expansion of digital copyright trading platforms and promotes financial innovations including copyright financing, insurance, and securitisation.
