International prize for translation work
Head and Professor of the Department of Cultural Studies, Prof Tejaswini NIRANJANA, was awarded DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2018 for her English translation of No Presents Please, a collection of stories set in Mumbai written in the southern Indian language of Kannada by poet and short story writer Jayant KAIKINI.
This is the first time that a translated work has won the prestigious prize, which rewards the best writing about south Asian culture from writers of any ethnicity and from all over the world. Prof Niranjana and Kaikini shared the US$25,000 (£19,100) prize.
US National Book Critics Circle Award
The book “Inseparable: The Original Siamese Twins and Their Rendezvous with American History” of Prof Yunte HUANG, Tong Tin Sun Chair Professor of English was listed as a finalist under the “biography” category - along with 31 others - for the National Book Critics Circle Award, which is one of the most prestigious book awards in the US. The book was deemed as one of the Best Books of the Year in 2018 by Newsweek, New York Times, National Public Radio and San Francisco Chronicle.
A Top 5 scholar in international higher education research
Prof Ka Ho MOK, Vice-President and Lam Man Tsan Chair Professor of Comparative Policy, is ranked among the Top 5 scholars in the world in citations relating to research on international higher education (Science Mapping in the Research of Higher Education Internationalisation from 2013 to 2018: Asian Trends).
Prof Mok’s International and transnational education for whose interests? A study on the career development of Chinese students is recognised as a top cited paper in Higher Education Quarterly - “TOP CITED ARTICLE 2018-2019”.
