Hi! I am a PhD student in the Philosophy department of Lingnan University and a grateful recipient of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme scholarship from the University Grants Committee (UGC).
My current area of focus is normative ethics, and in particular on the relationship and competition between morality and other parts of life that are valuable and meaningful, demandingness objections in ethics, moral options, and the extent to which better-off people ought to contribute their resources towards helping the less fortunate. My chief supervisor is Derek Baker and my co-supervisor is Andrea Sauchelli.
I am also interested in various issues related to moral realism, the meaning of life, social philosophy (particularly analytic feminism and the philosophy of romance and love), religious philosophy, Eastern philosophy, and applied ethics (particularly animal ethics), and I have recently published on the ethics of monogamy and the ethics of publishing.
My master’s thesis was about the capacity for birds to experience emotions. I tried to demonstrated that (at least some) birds can feel emotions using methodological, behavioral, and physiological evidence. I also defended the idea that birds have the neurological and cognitive capacities for emotions, as well as the idea that we should make attributions of propositional attitudes and thoughts to them. I have ran or worked as a teaching assistant for classes on Animal Consciousness, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Law, and Applied Ethics.
Previously, I have worked as a tutor at Pikes Peak Community College and taught English at the Sichuan University of Science and Engineering through through the Peace Corps’ United States-China Friendship Volunteer program.
In my free time, I enjoy making music and writing stories, plays, and comedy. Some of my stories and plays have been published and my humor writing sometimes appears on McSweeney’s. Besides that, I’m passionate about politics, music, postmodern novels, movies, rainy day walks, and YouTube edutainment.
