In the moral complexities of modern life, Levinas's stand, his insistence, on the importance of ethics constitute a difficult challenge. Does Levinas expect too much from fallible human beings? Is he fanatical (unreasonable) about ethical behaviour? How important is ethics to Levinas, and how important (or unimportant) is ethics to the rest of us?
