Social and Public Policy Studies Stream

This Stream is concerned with the study of social and public policies, particularly as they relate to rapid changes in a local, regional and global environment. Issues brought on by such changes affect individuals, social groups, and social and public institutions in different ways. Social and economic issues such as ageing and population, employment, health and social welfare are commonly faced by policy makers in different societies, and the policies formulated in response to these issues are often the subject of heated debates and controversies. The Stream is designed to provide interdisciplinary perspectives that will enhance students’ ability to analyse social and public policy issues and debates, thereby facilitating them to become fully-engaged members of the local and international community.

Graduates will be able to demonstrate understanding of:

    • key social and public policy issues and their importance in contemporary societies,
    • major theories and perspectives of social and public policy analysis,
    • the nature and context of policy making and its impact, as well as the interaction between values, politics, and policy choices.

Graduates will have the ability to:

    • critically summarise, analyse and discuss policy-related materials with clarity and confidence, both verbally and in writing,
    • work independently as well as in groups,
    • engage and contribute to current policy debates.

We expect graduates to embody and embrace the value(s) of:

    • scientific thinking and its methods in social studies,
    • open-mindedness, critical thinking, and tolerance,
    • life-long learning attitude and self motivation.
