Lingnan University (LU) proved its world-class research capabilities in the Research Assessment Exercise 2014 exercise conducted by the University Grants Committee (UGC). The results, announced in 2015, show that LU more than held its own against the seven other UGC-funded universities. LU had among its cost centres a percentage as high as 15% of its output rated as 4-star (“world-leading”) which compared well with the sector-wide attainment.

LU’s research performance is recognised by the remarkable funding results in the 2017/18 exercise of the General Research Fund (GRF), Early Career Scheme (ECS) and Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship Scheme (HSSPFS). LU has obtained funding for 22 GRF/ECS projects at a total amount of $7.4 million. As compared with our results for the 2016/17 excercise, it is more than doubled in terms of the number of successful projects and a 61% increase of fund. As regards the HSSPFS, LU’s success rate is 100%, and is one of only 5 successful projects among the 21 applications from all the eight UGC-funded universities.

On the basis of LU’s 2016-2022 Strategic Plan, seven Strategic Research Themes have been identified to guide the development ahead in research and knowledge transfer. We shall consolidate our research strengths and forge closer ties with eminent universities and institutions to promote regional and international collaborations for research excellence and internationalization of student learning.

Strategic Research Themes

  • Economic and International Development
  • Comparative Social Policy and Governance and Social Justice
  • Business Ethics, Entrepreneurship and Corporate Sustainability
  • Interdisciplinary Humanities
  • Transcultural Studies
  • Art, Performance and the Contemporary World
  • Smart City and Urban Innovation

In research collaborations and on the international front, we are gratified to see advancements which include the following:

  • Lingnan academics’ expertise is well proven by the University being a partner of the Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE), the world’s largest research centre on higher education led by the University College London (UCL) Institute of Education and participated by 10 other leading universities. Prof Ka Ho MOK, our Vice-President and Lam Man Tsan Chair Professor of Comparative Policy, leads a three-year research programme as an important part of this £6 million project, and collaborates with the UCL Institute of Education and the Asia Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership in the US to co-launch the “Inter-University Research Consortium for Higher Education”.
  • A 2-year international collaborative study on “The Cost Effectiveness of Integrating Weather Index Agricultural Insurance into the Productive Safety Net Program in Ethiopia” is led by Prof Alex Wong of LU’s Economics Department with a grant of €300,000 provided by the WOTRO Science for Global Development program of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) to work with research institutions in the Netherlands, the US and Ethiopia. Among the seven projects funded by NWO in that round, this project is the only one led by a university in Asia. The other six come from the Netherlands, UK and Switzerland.

These significant results and achievements demonstrate LU’s deep commitment to research and scholarship while remaining true to our liberal arts mission of providing quality teaching and mentorship to our students.
