arrowFellowship vs Studentship

Applicants for admission to PhD programmes at Lingnan via the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) will concurrently be considered for regular places assigned to the University through Postgraduate Studentships (PGSs) awards. Consistent with the emphasis we place on close collaboration with students, our academic experts will be happy to hear from strong potential applicants and to seek to help them develop their ideas for research. Outstanding candidates will be nominated by the University to compete for the HKPFS. Those who are nominated but are not finally offered the Fellowship, and those not selected for nomination for the Fellowship, will be given separate consideration for admission at Lingnan via PGS awards. The PGSs are awarded to full-time students to support their daily subsistence, tuition fees and other expenses that they may incur during the course of their studies. The monthly stipend for 2019-20 is HK$17,390 before confirmation of candidature and HK$17,730 after confirmation of candidature.

PhD Fellowship awardees will be provided with a Fellowship with a monthly stipend for a maximum period of 3 years.  The monthly stipend for 2019-20 is HK$25,800 (subject to annual review). For awardees with a normative study period of 4 years, the University will offer the same level of Fellowship for their fourth year of study.

Also, starting from the 2019-20 academic year, the full tuition fee for the first year of study of a PhD Fellowship awardee will be waived.

[Note: A local HKPFS awardee is eligible for the scheme of Tuition Waiver for Local Research Postgraduate (RPg) Students offered by the HKSAR Government. The tuition fee for his/her normal study period will be waived.]
