Master of Cities and Governance students visit HKT operation centre to learn about technology and applications

Students in the Master of Cities and Governance programme went to the HKT Smart City Operation Center in Lai Chi Kok on October 18 to gain first-hand knowledge of emerging technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, managed cyber security (MCS), the Internet of Things (IoT), AI and smart applications.

The field trip was led by Vice-President Prof Joshua Mok Ka-ho, Dr. Ir. Rosiah Ho and Prof Paulina Wong, and, after the tour and demonstration, HKT Assistant Vice President & Digital Business Development Director Emerging Technologies Dr. Carlos Tam gave a presentation on how 5G accelerates the digital transformation of a smart city.

After the visit, the students agreed that learning activities are very useful in explaining smart city infrastructure development in terms of technical and operational implementation, as well as showing them the considerations and challenges when innovative smart city applications are developed in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.

Last year, Lingnan University and HKT signed a memorandum of understanding to promote smart city development and gerontechnology, supporting smart ageing and socialpreneurship in Hong Kong. HKT also offers LU graduates internship and employment opportunities for wider engagements in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.
