Policy and Comparative Development Studies Seminar Series

The eighteenth Policy and Comparative Development Studies Seminar Series in this summer was held on June 30, 2022. The seminar was presented by Mr. Oladosu Ayomide Oluwaseyi with the topic of “Social Networks, Access to Healthcare and the Health-related Quality of Life of young informal workers in Nigeria’s construction industry”.

His study draws attention to the health vulnerabilities of young people as a result of the rapidly changing labour market dynamics, such as rising unemployment and underemployment, which are driving many young people into the informal sector. The research aims to promote healthcare access as a mechanism through which social networks affect young people's health-related quality of life in order to advance the findings of previous studies. The research examined the relationships between social networks, access to healthcare, and the health-related quality of life among young informal workers in Nigeria using a mixed-methods approach that included 686 surveys and 32 in-depth interviews of young construction artisans in Nigeria. The preliminary results show that there are significant relationships between social networks, access to healthcare, and the health-related quality of life of this group of young people.
