Policy and Comparative Development Studies Seminar Series

On 14 April 2022, the seminar under the theme “Successful Aging through Aging in Place”, co-organized by the Institute of Policy Studies and the School of Graduate Studies, was held online. It was the twelfth Policy and Comparative Development Studies Seminar Series and presented by Mr. Huang Feng, with over 30 students and faculty members joined.

Population aging has become a global phenomenon. Aging in place (AIP) has been adopted to cope with the aging population worldwide. According to the statistic of the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China in 2020, 99% of the Chinese elderly experience AIP. Mr. Huang invoked the concept of successful aging as a theoretical perspective on AIP with Shenzhen, China as the backdrop. He adopted the successful aging model of Rowe and Kahn (1987, 1997, 1998) and employed a mixed method with qualitative and quantitative research. Findings showed that financial security and intergenerational relations are critical values for successful aging through AIP, which does not accord with the three criteria of successful aging of Rowe and Kahn. Apparently, the successful aging model of Rowe and Kahn cannot explain well for the Chinese elderly in Shenzhen. Drawing on the findings, Mr. Huang argued that the successful aging model of Rowe and Kahn should not be misused to promote AIP in the Chinese context, and he proposed a new aging model, namely, Two Roads successful aging model, to enhance the possibility of successful aging through AIP for the Chinese elderly.
