Bridging Digital Divide: STEM and A.I. Education with Life Planning Experience
消除數碼隔閡:STEM與A.I.教育結合的生涯規劃

Introduction

Since AlphaGo defeated a professional Go master in 2016, Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) has been deeply engraved in the minds of human beings. Nowadays, general mechanical engineering is no longer surprising in our daily life, but when it combined with A.I., everyone will be eager to express their thirst for innovative technology. However, Hong Kong is lagging behind in the application of A.I. According to a study by the Asia Business Council, Hong Kong ranked second to last among the eight Asian places covered in the study, just above Indonesia and the last of the Four Asian Tigers, while China ranked first. The Hong Kong SAR Government has earmarked $10 billion to build the InnoHK Cluster in the first half of 2020 to gather top talents from all around the world to develop A.I. and robotic technologies. Although the HKSAR government stated that Hong Kong's universities and colleges excel in A.I. technology and related fields, and their R&D capabilities are at the forefront of the world, why are they still lagging behind other Asian regions in A.I. applications? It all boils down to one thing – our education system does not follow tightly to social development. It is necessary to strengthen our basic education, the education system needs to be closely adjusted to keep pace with society due to the rapid development of technology, hence, to avoid digital divide, and to enhance the effectiveness of Hong Kong to nurture innovative technology talents.
