Peking University, Lingnan University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison co-organized the education forum to discuss the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on global higher education

 

 

On 5 November 2020, Peking University Graduate School of Education successfully hosted the Peking-Lingnan-Wisconsin Education Forum to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global higher education. This Forum was co-organized by Peking University, Lingnan University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with the support from the Asia Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership and Lingnan’s Institute of Policy Studies. The Education Forum was also a part of the celebration activities of the 40 anniversary of the Graduate School of Education, Peking University. Due to the pandemic, this year’s Forum was held online. Including speakers and audiences, more than 80 participants from 15 universities of Mainland China, Hong Kong, the US, the UK, and Canada joined the Forum.

 

The Education Forum started with the opening remarks of Prof. Fengqiao Yan (Dean of Graduate School of Education, Peking University). In the keynote speech of Prof. Ka Ho Mok (Vice President, Lingnan University), he shared the series of research projects conducted by Lingnan teams to explore how the COVID-19 pandemic influences international higher education. Especially, Prof. Mok’s speech emphasized students’ perspectives on the impact of the pandemic on their studying abroad decisions.

 

In this whole day event, presenters including faculty members, researchers, and graduate students from Lingnan University, Peking University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison shared their research on how the pandemic influences higher education in various aspects, including online teaching and learning, international student mobility, university governance, institutional collaboration, and difficulties to research amid pandemic. Online participants also actively joined in discussions with speakers and shared their own experiences.

 

In closing remarks, as the representative of Lingnan University, Prof. Mok appreciated all participants’ contributions to this Forum. Prof. Wenqin Shen, on behalf of Peking University, also expressed his appreciation to the Forum organizers and participants and welcomed everyone to attend the next year’s Education Forum.
