In the 21st century, housing is at the centre stage of social, political and economic events and debates. Housing affordability problems are at the top of most policy agendas. Social divisions are closely connected with patterns of housing advantage and disadvantage. Economic instability, globally and locally, has been strongly associated with the operation of housing markets.
This lecture will explore the key drivers shaping the contemporary housing question and place local and regional housing issues in a broader international context.

Ray Forrest is Research Professor in Cities and Social Change. He was previously Head of the Department of Public Policy and Chair Professor of Housing and Urban Studies at the City University of Hong Kong. He is also Emeritus Professor of Urban Studies at the University of Bristol and a Fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences. He is currently involved in research on urbanism in contemporary China; the neighbourhood and new mobilities; housing wealth, financialisation and social re-stratification.
