Abstract

Pandemic provides impetus to change the world that we live in. Cities must be smarter than ever in order to overcome unprecedented global challenges. Artificial intelligence, geographic information system (GIS), big data, cloud, internet of things, robots, sharing economy, etc., are shaping a new phase of development for the smart city. How Hong Kong can seize the opportunity to create a legend?

 

Nurturing people and equipping our future workforce with professional knowledge and skills become a critical success factor to build a smart city. Universities in Hong Kong are often world-leading and internationally recognised. As one of the leading smart city in Asia and part of the Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong is well-positioned to attract top talents around the world to form an innotech hub. What we need right now is to create an ecosystem for our talents to unleash their full potential. This presentation will review the current situation of the smart city initiatives in Hong Kong and explore the way forward for Hong Kong to be an international innovation and technology hub.

Dr. Winnie Tang, JP

Founder & Honorary President, Smart City Consortium

Dr. Winnie Tang, JP, is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Geography, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). She is one of the locally-bred IT entrepreneurs of Hong Kong. Dr. Tang has over 20 years of experience in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry. Dr. Tang is the Founder and Chairman of Esri China (Hong Kong) Limited, an international office of Esri which specializes in Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, and is among the top 50 software companies in the world.

 

Over the years, Dr. Tang promotes technological and social developments by writing articles and serving the society. She also shares her views regarding conservation, smart city and entrepreneurship to instil in positive attitudes to the community. She has published twelve Chinese and English books and over 600 research papers, newspaper articles and journals. Some of her current major appointments include Founder and Honorary President of the Smart City Consortium; Member of ICT Services Advisory Committee, Hong Kong Trade Development Council; and Board Member of AeHIN (Asia eHealth Information Network) etc.

 

In recognition of Dr. Tang’s works, she has been awarded the Distinguished Alumni for HKU Faculty of Science in 2009, the Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 2006, the Women of Influence – Young Achiever of the Year Award by the American Chamber of Commerce in 2004.
