Hong Kong’s “elegant” university

A liberal arts university in Hong Kong, Lingnan’s history goes back to the establishment of the Christian College in Guangzhou in 1888. Adhering to its motto of “Education for service” and belief in whole-person education, Lingnan has become internationally known and respected as a liberal arts university and global leader in “Quality Education” and “Impactful Research”, third worldwide in"Quality Education" in the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2021, and “Very High” In “Research Intensity” in the QS World University Rankings 2022. LU’s research in the humanities, social sciences and business were classified as “World Leading” and “Internationally Excellent” in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2020, conducted by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong (UCG).

A broad-based curriculum, rich residential campus, close faculty-student relationships, and an emphasis on exchange and extra-curricular learning experiences are at the core of Lingnan’s liberal arts education, and in the QS Asia University Rankings 2021, announced last November, Lingnan came first in “International Faculty”, “Inbound Exchange Students” and “Outbound Exchange Students”, affirming its success in international academic and cultural exchanges and collaboration over the years.

Lingnan’s undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research postgraduate programmes in the Arts, Business and Social Sciences, and our broad curriculum cover a wide range of general education and interdisciplinary courses which provide students with comprehensive foundational knowledge in multiple subjects.

For example, the LU School of Graduate Studies, in addition to continuously developing taught and research postgraduate programmes that align with the development of the world, and especially the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, co-organises exchange programmes and learning activities with well-known higher education institutions at home and abroad, including Oxford and Tsinghua Universities. To enrich students’ learning experiences, it regularly holds international academic research conferences such as the Conference for Higher Education Research, and Global Higher Education Webinar Series and experiential learning courses such as the Two-Day Education Leaders’ Training Programme: Inspirations from Hong Kong Disneyland, to give a few examples.

In addition to hostel accommodation on our Tuen Mun main campus, the School of Graduate Studies offers postgraduate students the reasonably priced option of staying at the Jao Tsung-I Academy’s Heritage Lodge, a historic landmark in Kowloon. Lingnan has received the highest score of the eight UGC-funded universities in students’ “satisfaction with the quality and value which they have gained from their teaching and learning experience” in the 2019 University Grants Committee’s University Accountability Agreements annual progress report. This was the second consecutive year in which the University came top, based on evaluation by students.

It is not without reason that Lingnan, with its unique liberal arts setting, has been called Hong Kong’s “elegant” university.
