Students of the Master of Cities and Governance programme (MCG) attended the HKT Smart City Operation Centre in Lai Chi Kok on October 18 to gain a first-hand knowledge of emerging technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, managed cybersecurity (MCS), the Internet of Things (IoT), AI, and smart applications.

The field trip was led by Professor Joshua Mok Ka-ho, Vice-President of Lingnan University, Dr Ir. Rosiah Ho, and Prof Paulina Wong. After the tour and demonstration, Dr Carlos Tam, Assistant Vice President & Digital Business Development Director of Emerging Technologies at HKT, gave a presentation about how 5G accelerates the digital transformation of a smart city.

After the visit, students agreed that the learning activities were a useful way to understand smart city infrastructure development in terms of technical and operational implementation. The learning activities also demonstrated the considerations and challenges that face those developing innovative smart city applications in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

Last year, Lingnan University and HKT signed a memorandum of understanding to promote smart city development and gerontechnology, and agreed to support smart ageing and socialpreneurship in Hong Kong. HKT also offers LU graduates internships and employment opportunities in Hong Kong and the GBA.
