Lingnan University Organises International Symposium to discuss the Internationalization and Quality Management in Higher Education



Lingnan University co-hosted the international symposium on “Internationalization and Quality Management in Higher Education” with the Asia Pacific Higher Education Research Partnership (APHERP), with the collaboration with School of Public Administration of South China University of Technology, and School of Education of Guangzhou University on 26 February 2019.

The Symposium has invited distinguished scholars from the Japan, Malaysia, Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong to discuss how tertiary institutions from different regions in Asia Pacific region responded to the internationalization and its challenges to quality management in higher education. Several themes were highlighted in the Symposium, namely, Managing Student Learning, Internationalization and Research Development, International Higher Education and Graduate Employment, Critical Reflections of Higher Education Development in Asia, and Internationalization of Higher Education and Knowledge Transfer.


Prof Angela Yung Chi Hou, Professor of Education at National Chengchi University, Taiwan, and the Executive Director of Higher Education Evaluation & Accreditation Council of Taiwan, discussed the quality assurance and qualification recognition at the Symposium. Prof Hou pointed out the important roles of national quality assurance agencies and professional accreditors on oversea qualification recognition in Asia higher education.



Professor Huang Futao

As an economic leader in the Asia Pacific region, Japan’s higher education system witnessed faculty mobility under the impact of the trend of internationalization. Professor Huang Futao from Hiroshima University of Japan shared his recent research on the differentiated motivations and work roles of Chinese and American faculty at Japanese Universities.


Recoganising the trends of globalisation and internationalisation on higher education in the Asia Pacific region, Prof Ka Ho Mok, Lam Man Tsan Chair Professor of Comparative Policy of Lingnan University of Hong Kong and Prof Zhiqiang Wang, Dean of School of Public Administration at South China University of Technology of Mainland China, shared their views on the challenges and prospects of glocalization and higher education development in the Asia Pacific Region. Meanwhile, Prof Husaina Banu Kenayathulla of University of Malaya, Malaysia discussed the employment of Malaysian university graduates at the beginning of a Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Apart from strengthening its international research collaboration, this international symposium at Lingnan University also enhanced its teaching and research standards and benefited its student by enriching their learning experience. Two postgraduate studies sessions were held in the Symposium to provide a unique opportunity for postgraduate students to present their works and get comments from their colleagues and experienced scholars. In addition, the Symposium offered opportunities for students of the Master of Arts in International Higher Education and Management to have extensive interactions with experts and leading scholars in higher education studies.
