When the special era faces the rapid technological change, structural transformation, global COVID-19 pandemic and increasing political changes or conflicts, many cities share a constellation of challenges and these urban challenges take on a qualitatively new face at the scale of a megacity. It also poses fresh questions about how we view the role of social governance and social policy, which informs the academic and practical solutions for contemporary societies.
The conference invites researchers, practitioners and students from China and UK to reflect on megacity’s experiences and challenges from an international and comparative perspective, particularly in areas around pluralism governance, social and public service provision such as housing, education, family support, elderly care, environment etc. It sets out to facilitate scholarly discussion on social governance practice and social-value-oriented policy development in megacity, so as to promote urban resilience enabling sustainable development, well-being and inclusive growth.
