Highlights

Hosted by the Department of Visual Studies (VS) and the Department of Philosophy with the support of the Centre for Film and Creative Industries (CFCI) of Lingnan University, the Master of Arts in Creative and Media Industries (MACMI) provides both basic and advanced courses on creative and media industries, i.e. connected fields in film, television, music, performing arts, architecture, visual arts, and interactive media, as well as archive, museum and amusement services, which collectively constitute the most dynamic sector of cultural economy in Hong Kong.

It combines established studies on cultural and creative industries. In response to the needs of Hong Kong society and economy, it aims to provide an interdisciplinary understanding for students to collectively explore the most dynamic sector of cultural economy and foster development of the emergent field of creative and media industries studies, new to Hong Kong and the region. Aside from required and elective courses, students can complete a research dissertation as capstone experience, they will engage in independent research and interrogate relevant scholarly perspectives on the object of their study.

The MACMI programme will be structured on three grounds:

• The concept of creativity and the evolution of creative and media industries;
• Recent developments enabled by globalisation and digital technology;
• Hong Kong as a hub for creative and media industries in the region.

English is the medium of instruction for most courses. Some courses may be conducted in Cantonese or Putonghua.

Graduation Requirements

To qualify for the award of the Master of Arts in Creative and Media Industries offered by Lingnan University, students must, where applicable:

• Obtain 30 credits;
• Attain a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.67 (equivalent to B-) or above; and
• Fulfil the University exit requirement on English language competency, if applicable; and fulfil all University/programme requirements.
• A student who fulfils all the requirements for graduation shall be awarded a Master of Arts in Creative and Media Industries degree with one of the following classifications:

• Students will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Creative and Media Industries if they complete no less than five courses with a minimum CGPA of 2.67, and do not continue in the programme. Acceptance of this intermediate award implies an intention not to complete the final award of the programme.
• In all cases, students admitted with marginal English language standards shall be permitted to graduate and awarded the final or intermediate award upon fulfilling the University’s English exit requirement.

Tuition Fee

1-year Full-time:

For 2023-2024 intake, the annual tuition fee for full-time study is HK$140,000.

2-year Part-time:

For 2023-2024 intake, the annual tuition fee for part-time study is HK$70,000.

Scholarship

Purpose and Background

Master of Arts in Creative and Media Industries (MACMI) Programme offers scholarships to attract quality students, encourage their pursuit of academic excellence, and recognise outstanding graduates. The following regulations shall apply with effect in the Academic Year of 2021/22:

1. The Scholarship shall be known as the “Master of Arts in Creative and Media Industries Scholarship” （創意及媒體產業文學碩士獎學金）.
2. Two kinds of scholarship—the Entrance Scholarship and the Graduate Scholarship will be offered to the students from the MACMI Programme at the time of entrance or at the time of graduation.
3. The value of each award is HK$10,000

Eligibility and Criteria

1. The Scholarship will be awarded to a maximum of 4 students in the MACMI Programme.
2. The Entrance Scholarship will award 2 admittees with a good bachelor degree and an excellent academic record with IELTS 7.0 or above, or its equivalents.
3. The Graduate Scholarship will award 2 students who have distinguished themselves in their course of study with a final CGPA minimum of 3.5.
4. In their course of study each student will be eligible to receive only one scholarship award.
5. Apart from academic performance, the following areas will also be considered:
   • Professional commitment and development;
   • Leadership in academic or extra-curricular contexts.

Procedure

1. MACMI office will administer the Scholarship. The list of nominations shall be submitted to the MACMI Programme and Curriculum Committee (PCC) for endorsement.
2. A selection panel, comprised of the MACMI Programme Director and two teaching/academic members of the MACMI Programme, shall be formed to review the nominations.
3. The selection panel is required to submit the nomination form and result to the PCC of the MACMI Programme for endorsement of the scholarship offer(s).
4. Scholarships Arrangement: The Entrance Scholarship will be offered after the awardee has paid full tuition and has completed the first term, while the Graduate Scholarship will be offered at the time of release of the final CGPA.
5. The above regulations may be revised, with the endorsement of the University.

Targeted Taught Postgraduate Programmes Fellowships Scheme

Eligible local applicants shall be invited to apply for the Scheme. 

Entry requirements

• Applicants should hold a relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent standard awarded by a tertiary education institution recognised for this purpose by Lingnan University; or have obtained an equivalent qualification;
• For those applicants who do not hold a relevant degree, they might be admitted on an exceptional and case-by-case basis. They must provide satisfactory evidence of academic/professional qualification deemed equivalent to a bachelor’s degree or having outstanding achievements or high distinction in the respective profession.
• Applicants should demonstrate proficiency in English; and
• An applicant whose degree or, exceptionally, an alternative qualification deemed equivalent is not from a tertiary institution in Hong Kong or an English-speaking country should obtain a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)* or a band score of 6.5 or above in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)*, or an equivalent score in a recognised test, or an equivalent qualification to prove his/her language proficiency which will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

* Results must be within the validity period, viz. 2 years, from the time of submission of an admission application.
