Learning Enhancement Activities for Life Outside the Classroom

To enrich the student learning experience and to promote the development of Lingnan University (LU)’s Graduate Attributes (in terms of knowledge, skills, and attitude), the School of Graduate Studies (GS) has charted the Learning Enhancement Activities Plan (LEAP) for the postgraduate students. A total of 36 activities and workshops were offered in the academic year 2021-2022 for the students. Some of the highlighted activities are listed below-

Personal growth series - Collaborative planning and teaching at a local primary school

LU and Lingnan University Alumni Association (HK) Primary School offered an internship program for the master programme students in the last semester. Students from the Master of Social Sciences in Organisational Psychology and Education Management (OPEM) and Master of Arts in International Higher Education and Management (IHEM) were invited to organize the integrated language learning lessons for primary school students. LU students could apply what they learned from the master programmes to their teaching experiences. Through different interactive activities, LU students encouraged primary school students to speak well by constructing a fun learning environment. Teaching at the primary schools also allowed the students to gain first-hand education experiences at the local primary school, effectively practising their public speaking abilities and gaining career exposure.

"I believe my teaching ability in classroom management has been enhanced during this whole internship, by observing other lessons from groupmates and teaching by myself, which will be the most valuable experience for my future teaching career." said Zhebin, an OPEM student.

New experiences – New knowledge flows in various directions

The GS has introduced innovative topics and brought exposure to students through various forms of workshops and activities under the LEAP. The seminar titled “Teaching in the 'Metaverse' - The Potential of Roblox in Education” enabled the students to understand the Metaverse development and innovative education. The guest speaker from the Metaverse gaming and education platform shared the newest trends of the Metaverse, the rise of edutainment, and their impacts on the human world through a zoom session in April.

The GS also organized relaxing activities for students like the Zentangle workshop as the post-semester event for the GS students. Students were able to learn the basic principles of Zentangle and practice this self-help art therapy to reduce stress and enhance inner focus.

The LEAP from the GS is a great way to expand postgraduate students’ social networks, develop their interests, and lead to positive long-term outcomes. The GS commits to supporting student learning and personal development and engagement to increase their performance through various learning activities, thus enabling them to fully engage with the life of the University.
