International New York Times Athens Democracy Forum 2018 (ADF)

The Global Liberal Arts Alliance (GLAA) will join with Deree-The American College of Greece as Educational Partner for the prestigious New York Times Athens Democracy Forum (ADF) to be held in Athens, Greece from 16th to 18th September 2018. The theme of the Forum, ‘Democracy in Danger: Solutions for a Changing World’, speaks to the mission of Liberal Arts education to prepare global citizens who can work together to solve complex problems that bring positive change to a turbulent world. Lingnan University, being a member of GLAA, will nominate two candidates to be considered for selection for the Alliance delegation to attend the Forum.


Date:      16 - 18 September 2018 (Sun – Tue)

Venue:    Athens, Greece


Students are responsible for incidental expenses only.

  • Students are responsible to purchase airfare FIRST. The University will provide subsidy of up to HK$7,000, to students who successfully attend the Forum with submission of an evaluation report in English (600 words with 8 photos).
  • The New York Times will provide the registration fee.
  • The American College of Greece will provide housing, meals, local transportation, and manage program activities.


Scope of Students’ Engagement:

  • Student delegates are asked to consider the questions raised by the Forum’s theme from the perspective of youth from their part of the world. Student delegates will work in small groups on the four Forum topics and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each student will be asked to share the results of their work with their campus and to create an action plan to be taken back to their campus.
  • A focus of student involvement this year will be on two SDGs, SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 13 – Climate Action. Student delegates will be asked to familiarize themselves with the Sustainable Development Goals program and the featured SDGs, possibly researching case studies on how companies, NGOs, and governments are using them. This work will prepare students for their active role as scribe during the Sustainable Goals Luncheon. Working in groups, student delegates will write a white paper summarizing the recommendations for each SDG discussed at the luncheon.
  • A select group of students will participate in a panel session in collaboration with Get with The Times for a conversation with a senior NYT journalist and one or two notable speaker(s) to discuss the vital questions facing young people today.
  • The students selected to attend the Forum must commit to doing preparatory work over the summer and in Athens prior to the Forum. This will include discussion of the four Forum topics, research into the SDGs, and meeting each other via email and video conferencing to discuss the Forum topics and the SDGs.



  1. Full-time Undergraduate Students (Except Year-4 students), preferably Local Students
  2. Attaining Cumulative GPA 3.0 or above
  3. Advanced oral and written skills in English
  4. Having a keen interest in and engagement with issues of globalization, democracy, and global governance, and be able to work with students from diverse backgrounds
  5. Demonstrating high sense of responsibility, co-operation and strong participation in student activities in the University, and notable contribution to community service

A 7-day leadership training course organised by the Outward Bound Hong Kong

Attend a 7-day outward bound training for FREE!! (original fee $4,850)
*The Foundation will sponsor each participant HK$4,000 and the University will sponsor each successful applicant another HK$800.

- Full-time Local Undergraduate Students
- The Cumulative GPA must be 2.2 or above
- Applicants should demonstrate high sense of responsibility, co-operation and strong participation in student activities in the University, and notable contribution to community service
- Applicants should be recommended by an academic staff
**Twelve students will be selected to represent the University, with at least one-third of the awardees shall be students studying in business-related courses.

 - To maximize the capability of self-management;
 - To strengthen problem-solving potentials;
 - To acquire knowledge and skills in team building;
 - To appreciate different types of leadership styles;
 - To become more ready to take up leadership role in challenging situation.

International Youth Exchange Programme (YA 20A Programme)
Organized by the Home Affairs Bureau and the Commission on Youth

Programme date: July 2017 & March 2018

Free Trips to Japan, Ireland or Singapore
Homestay, visits, interactions with youths of visiting country plus a variety of cultural activities*

Date: 7 – 14 days (tentative) between July 2017 and March 2018
Location: Ireland, Japan, Singapore and other countries deemed appropriate


  1. Aged between 18-24 as at 1 April 2016, i.e. candidates born between 31 Mar 1992 and 1 April 1998 who are holders of valid Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card;
  2. Proficient in English;
  3. Knowledgeable about Hong Kong and China;
  4. Have sound common sense and good academic background;
  5. Have impressive record of volunteer/community service in the past three years; and
  6. Have a valid travel document.

 *Candidates should be prepared to have a very busy schedule before and after the visit.
