Building Bridges: How a Translation Programme is Connecting Communities and Careers

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the demand for language professionals is only growing. The Department of Translation at Lingnan University has been honing the language skills of many young talents, and one student in particular has caught our attention for her remarkable achievements and future aspirations.

Meet Anson Yu, an outstanding student in the Department of Translation, who has not only excelled academically but also devoted herself whole-heartedly to the community through her extensive involvement in various community service initiatives spanning over 11 years. Recently, Anson was awarded the prestigious For Our Future Scholarship and the Dr and Mrs James Tak Wu Awards for Outstanding Service. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Anson to discuss her views on our translation programme and her future career plans.

In Lingnan’s Awards Presentation Ceremony 2023, Anson conveys appreciation to the donors for their generous support on behalf of the scholarship recipients.

Anson shared her appreciation for the Department of Translation’s efforts in equipping students with practical skills that go beyond the traditional classroom setting. “I believe the department’s focus on offering more practical translation subjects has been instrumental in preparing me for a successful career,” she said. “These subjects have allowed me to better understand the real-life challenges faced by translators and have helped me develop communications skills that are transferrable to workplace settings.”

Anson went on to explain that the hands-on experience she gained from these practical subjects has given her a competitive edge in the job market. “Translating documents and working with clients in simulated scenarios have been invaluable in building my confidence and work ethic,” she added.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Anson has been actively involved in community service, which led to her receiving the For Our Future Scholarship for her commitment to bettering her community over a decade. The Dr and Mrs James Tak Wu Awards for Outstanding Service also recognized her exemplary contributions to society. In 2018, she participated in a volunteer exchange program in Busan, Korea and was recognized as one of Hong Kong’s Outstanding Youth Volunteers.

“From the challenges to the triumphs, I know that each step is leading me towards my goals and dreams,” says Anson.

When asked about her career plans, Anson shared her excitement about joining one of the top-tier banks to embark on her career journey. “I believe my language skills will be an asset in my new role, as I’ll be able to support the bank’s diverse workforce and help bridge the communication gaps that may arise,” she explained.

Anson is confident that her background in translation and the practical skills she acquired at the university will be beneficial in her new role. “Being able to navigate different languages and cultures is crucial in a globalized world, and I am grateful for the education and opportunities I’ve received at Lingnan,” she said. Anson’s professional journey is an inspiration to fellow students and aspiring translators as she sets out on her path. Her dedication to both her studies and community service has earned her well-deserved recognition, and we look forward to witnessing her continued success in the years to come.
