    Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in Art History

    The Department of Visual Studies has a multi-disciplinary faculty in film studies, art history, and museum studies. Our undergraduate major has two concentrations: art history and film art. Another new two-year BA Programme in Creative Media Industries will begin in fall 2022. Besides undergraduate education, the Department offers two MA Programmes: MA in Curating and Art History and MA in Creative and Media Industries. An artist residency programme and a new gallery space on campus provide a vibrant environment for research and teaching.     The Department is inviting applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Associate/Assistant Professor to contribute to teaching and research in art history. The appointee is expected to: 1. convene and deliver courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, such as “Arts of Europe,” "Art from Antiquity to the Enlightenment," “Art from Romanticism to Modernism,” and “Critical Perspectives in Art History,” including supervising student final projects; 2. develop high-level research and deliver research outputs with high impact, and 3. contribute to service and research development of the Department.


    General Requirements


    Applicants for the Associate Professor position should have: (i) A PhD in art history, with a specialisation in art history of Europe or its intersection with other regions; (ii) An excellent publication record in top-tier journals and/or university presses; (iii) A track record in teaching courses on art history of Europe; (iv) A good track record in successful competitive grant applications; (v) A proven record in academic leadership and institutional service.


    Applicants for the Assistant Professor position should have: (i) A PhD in art history, with a specialisation in art history of Europe or its intersection with other regions; (ii) A publication record in peer-reviewed journals of good international standing; (iii) A track record in teaching courses on art history of Europe; (iv) Some experience in academic administration.


    Candidates are required to provide information about their research records and evidence of high-quality teaching in relevant subjects.


    Appointment

    The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee. The appointee is entitled to apply for both internal and external grants in support of his/her teaching, research and conference activities.

    Appointment will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment with possibility of consideration for substantiation.

    Hong Kong Research Grants Council Postdoctoral Fellowship

    Lingnan University’s Department of Visual Studies welcomes applicants in cinema and digital media studies to nominate for a Hong Kong Research Grants Council Postdoctoral Fellowship competition. The fellowships last for 36 months and come with an initial annual salary of HKD $399,924 (about USD $51,000) that can be increased at the discretion of the department. The appointment will also come with a HKD $13,130 research and travel allowance. Although nomination does not guarantee a fellowship, individuals who have been nominated stand a strong chance in the competition.


    Candidates from all fields of cinema and media studies are encouraged to apply. However, candidates whose interests substantially align with those of existing department members have a greater chance of success.     We will provide a wide range of opportunities for self-conducted, mentored, and collaborative research in a vibrant and supportive environment. The recipient of an RGC Postdoctoral Fellowship will be paired with a Visual Studies faculty mentor and is expected to publish research output with international impact.     Qualifications


    • Applicants must have obtained/ been conferred a PhD degree or an equivalent qualification on or after 1 January 2019, or will complete the requirement of a PhD degree or an equivalent qualification by 31 August 2023
    • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in cinema studies, media studies, art history, communication studies, or related fields with experience conducting cinema and digital media studies research.
    • Academic potential, the capacity to bring varied ideas to the Visual Studies department, and the willingness to connect with a wide variety of colleagues and students will be significant selection criteria.

    Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme for the Academic Session 2023/24

    Lingnan University’s Department of Visual Studies welcomes applicants in cinema and digital media studies, museum studies, and creative industries for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) for the Academic Session 2023/24. The applicants who are seeking admission as new full-time PhD students in the fields of cinema and digital media studies, Chinese art, museum studies, and creative industries are encouraged to apply.     Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability/potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities. In 2022-23, each Fellowship awardee will be provided with a monthly stipend of HK$27,100 (subject to annual review; approximately USD 3,400) and a conference/research-related travel allowance of up to HK$13,600 per year (subject to annual review; approximately USD 1,700), for a maximum period of 3 years. For an awardee with a normative study period of 4 years, the University will offer the same level of fellowship and conference/research-related travel allowance for their fourth year of study.

    The Department of Visual Studies (VS) offers multi-disciplinary BA and MA programmes, broadly covering the history, theory and expression of visual art, moving images, material culture and the development of creative industries in Hong Kong, China and beyond. VS admits about 30 undergraduate, MPhil and PhD students each academic year. The Department will be responsible for setting up an exhibition hall for the display of a collection of Chinese art. This project will research the collection and develop curatorial approaches that can make Chinese art accessible and relevant to the public.

    Responsibilities


    The Department of Visual Studies invites applications for the position of Curator. Major duties include but are not limited to:

    • Research and interpret the collection of Chinese art, and produce a publication
    • Organise exhibitions and outreach programmes for the Exhibition Hall
    • Manage the Exhibition Hall and supervise a project coordinator
    • Perform other duties relating to the exhibitions organised by the Department

    Those who have solid experience in researching and curating traditional Chinese art are especially welcome.


    Requirements

    • MPhil or PhD in Chinese Art History, Visual Studies, Museum Studies, or relevant disciplines
    • Prior experience in researching and curating traditional Chinese art
    • Preferably with relevant working experience in museum management
    • Fluency in written and spoken English and Chinese (Putonghua and/or Cantonese)
    • Good command of MS Office, Excel, Photoshop and webpage applications
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal and creative thinking skills
    • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks

    Hosted by the Departments of Visual Studies and Philosophy with the support of the Centre for Film and Creative Industries (CFCI) of Lingnan University, the Master of Arts in Creative and Media Industries (MACMI) programme offers basic and advanced courses on creative and media industries, i.e. interconnected fields of film, television, music, performing arts, visual arts and interactive media as well as archive, museum and amusement services—which collectively constitute the most dynamic sector of cultural economy in Hong Kong.     The appointee is expected to provide a wide range of administrative support to the MACMI postgraduate programme.


    Responsibilities

    • Assisting the Programme Director in planning, coordinating and administering the MACMI postgraduate programme
    • Performing a wide range of administrative duties related to admissions and programme operations to ensure the smooth function of the programme, including admission processes and programme promotion, visa application, course arrangement, meeting planning, handling financial and budgeting matters
    • Providing secretarial support to the Programme Director/committees, teachers, and advisory assistance to students
    • Preparing relevant reports in relation to the programme administration
    • Liaising with internal and external parties and coordinate professional development activities (Internship, seminar or workshop)

    Requirements


    • A recognized Bachelor’s degree with at least two years of relevant experience, preferably in the tertiary education sector
    • Candidates with experience in postgraduate programme admission and administrative processes would be highly preferred
    • Good command of written and spoken English and Chinese (including Putonghua)
    • High level of competence in computer literacy
    • Good team spirit with a strong sense of responsibility and is willing to go the extra mile to complete tasks before deadlines
    • The initiative, report writing ability, and analytical skills to carry out duties independently and efficiently
    • Capability to work independently with minimum supervision
