The Nur Collective: Sounds of Guitars from the Foreign Land

Live broadcast via Zoom on 20 October 2020 @Chan Tak Tai Auditorium

The Nur Collective brought in the exquisite cultural landscape with the sound of traditional instruments from the world’s remote regions. Students enjoyed the performance of guitar-type instruments from such exotic places as Turkey, Uzbekistan and Central Asia. With exposure to folk and devotional pieces, it was a rare opportunity to experience diversity in music appreciating a wide range of genres.

The Nur Collective, founded in 2018, is a group of musicians and cultural workers that perform on unique traditional instruments with a shared passion for the music traditions and cultures across Eurasia and North Africa. Performing musicians were Musa Genç (Turkish ney, Turkish saz, vocals), Elnur Hajiyev (Middle Eastern darbuka, Uzbek doira), Eugene Leung (Arabic violin, Turkmen dutar, Uyghur tembur, Uzbek dutar), Alicia Lie (Arabic oud, vocals), and Nidhal Mazza (Arabic oud).

This performance is under the series "In Search of Heritage 2020" co-presented by the Core Curriculum and General Education Office, the Wong Bing Lai Music and Performing Arts Unit, and the Department of History.
