Description
Followed by last year's arts forum on 'Who needs the Arts?', this year the Arts Faculty has invited three leading young Hong Kong artists to discuss ‘Why we need the Arts?' at this March’s Lingnan Arts Festival.

Moderated by Ms Zoie So (Dept of Visual Studies), Cantonese opera performer Ms Eliza Li, independent filmmaker Mr Lo Chun-yip and media artist Ms Winnie Soon will share with us their views on the value and contribution of the arts in film, Chinese opera and media arts respectively.

About Eliza Li
Born into a family of Cantonese opera heritage, Li graduated from Wellesley College in 2000 with departmental honors majoring in Chinese and is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the art of Cantonese opera. In full-time training since 2002 to become a professional performer, she debuted as principal actress in Floral Princess (Youth Edition) production, part of the ”International Cantonese Opera Academic Conference 2007” organized by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Floral Princess (Youth Edition) was rerun in 2009. Other trained repertoires include Rejuvenation of the Red Plum, Sisterly Love in Turmoil and Peony Pavilion, etc. Beginning 2010, Li was cast as De Ling (B) in De Ling and Empress Dowager Ci Xi, and has since performed with the production at Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Shatin Town Hall and the 22nd Macau Arts Festival (2011). Li is also devoted to the English translation of Cantonese opera librettos.

About Lo Chun-yip
Lo Chun-yip is an independent filmmaker. Lo is a graduate of Creative Media programme, the City University of Hong Kong. From 2009 onwards, Lo has produced several short films, namely, Deep in Mind, 21 years after, Days After n Coming  and Paradox, which all set off from the social context with regard to the sense of questioning.

About Zoie So
Zoie So is teaching fellow at the Visual Studies Department. She is an interdisciplinary artist with a background in cultural criticism and media art. Her studio work is about how people do and should engage with technology. She explores theoretical concepts through art creation. She completed her bachelor's degree in Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong in 2004. She is also a MFA graduate of Studio Arts: Open Media from Concordia University in Montreal, where she also worked as a part-time teaching assistant in a video history course and an electronic art course.

About Winnie Soon
Winnie Soon is an artist and researcher. She studied Information System Degree and Media Cultures Master Degree in City University of Hong Kong. Then she awarded with scholarship and completed her second graduate degree in Digital Art and Technology at University of Plymouth (UK).

Soon is interested in network culture and data aesthetics. Her artistic practice ranges from interactive media, installation to digital print, projects focuses on the interplay between media, culture and communication. Her artworks have been exhibited internationally include Pulse Art and Technology Festival (USA), Mobile & DMB Festival (Korea), Stuttgarter Filmwinter Festival for expanded media (Germany), International Digital Art Festival (Bulgaria), Peninsula Arts Gallery (UK), IFVA (HK),  PhotoPark (China) etc.

She currently teaches at the Savannah College of Art and Design (HK).

活動介紹
承接去年的藝術論壇「誰需要藝術?」,今年嶺南大學藝術節請來了三位香港青年藝術家討論「我們為什麼需要藝術?」。討論會由蘇慧怡女士 (嶺南大學視覺研究系)主持,粵劇花旦李沛妍女士、獨立電影導演盧鎮業先生及媒體藝術家孫詠怡女士分別從電影、粵劇表演藝術及媒體創作的角度和我們談談藝術與生活。

李沛妍
畢業於美國衛斯理大學中文系。2002年全身投入成為職業演員。2007年參加《帝女花》五十周年紀念青年版演員招考,被選演出長平公主一角。其他演出劇目包括《再世紅梅記》及《秋雨菱花姊妹情》等。2010年起參演大型粵劇《德齡與慈禧》飾德齡(B 角),並曾先後五度公演。除演出外,還致力於翻譯粵劇劇本。

盧鎮業
獨立電影製作人。畢業於香港城市大學創意媒體學院,主修電影,喜歡以錄像為創作載體,化成言語。二零零九年開始拍攝一系列作品 :《打還打 . 唔好打頭》、《春夏之交》、《那年春夏 . 之後》、《淹沒》,從社會出發,一直追逐/探問。

在這文過飾非的年代,願見一步走一步,能拍多少是多少。

蘇慧怡
蘇慧怡現為香港嶺南大學視覺研究系授課導師,任教數碼影像及電子藝術等課程。蘇氏的作品探討人和普及媒體產品的交互關係,以及這種關係的物質性和晦澀性。她透過挪用、編碼、解構與重建的手法,以多種媒介建構充滿遊戲感與啟發性的藝術空間。

孫詠怡
孫氏喜歡通過不同的通訊媒介進行實驗及研究,並探討藝術與科技的關系。她尤對網絡文化及數據美學感興趣,作品以不同媒介如數碼打印、互動媒體及裝置去探討媒介,文化及通訊之間的相互關系,並在多個國家及城市展出如 Pulse Art and Technology Festival (美國), Mobile & DMB Festival (韓國), Stuttgarter Filmwinter Festival for expanded media (德國) International Digital Art Festival (保加利亞), Peninsula Arts Gallery (英國), IFVA (香港), PhotoPark (中國) 等。

孫氏現任教於薩凡納藝術設計學院﹣香港分校。
