Hong Kong students have grammar coming out of their ears. But this hasn’t stopped English standards from slipping in our city. Time for a revolution in learning. English is the world’s most flexible language in ways that no grammar books can ever tell us. Don’t learn from dull grammar books. Learn from practicing professionals with their clever techniques and their memorable words. Ads and slogans are everywhere. They are part of everyday life and the finest examples of marketplace English and persuasive writing. They show us the principles of effective writing as well as the beauty and impact of well-chosen words. By learning from ads and slogans, you will live the language and learn to love it for the rest of your life. It will also open doors to careers where good communication is valued and rewarded.

About Philip YEUNG
Philip Yeung is a well-known specialist in speechwriting for many of Hong Kong’s political, civic and academic leaders, including university presidents, vice-presidents, as well as Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary, and Secretary for the Treasury & Financial Services. He has learned from US Presidential speechwriters by studying their writings and in person. He was educated at the University of Toronto and briefly attended Exeter College, Oxford University on a scholarship. He is currently the Senior Communication Manager and Speechwriter to the President at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He contributes frequently to the Opinion Pages of the South China Morning Post, and has given lectures on the art of writing and public speaking at universities in Hong Kong and the Mainland.
