Lingnan University held the groundbreaking ceremony of the construction of The Jockey Club New Hall on 2 September 2010, the new student hostel donated by The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC). The new student hostel marks an important milestone in Lingnan’s development, helping the University accomplish its goal of providing 100% residence for undergraduates by 2012/13.

The new student hostel is made possible by the generous donation of HK$85 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust (the Trust). The hostel will provide 400 residential places.

Officiating at the ceremony, Mr Bernard Chan, the University’s Council Chairman thanked HKJC’s staunch support. He remarked, “With the concerted efforts of academics, students, and the unfailing support given by our stakeholders, Lingnan has all the potential to be the best liberal arts institution in the region.”

The Hong Kong Jockey Club's newly-elected Chairman, Mr T Brian Stevenson said that HKJC had a long history of contributing to Hong Kong's educational development. In recent years especially, it had invested substantially in higher education, believing that nurturing future leaders was critical to the city's future success and sustainability.

President Chan Yuk-Shee also expressed gratitude to the Trust for its generous donation, which helps the University address the needs and challenges that come with the liberal arts model and the 2012 new curriculum. He said that the new hostel places not only enable the University to nurture students with independent thinking, adaptability, a sense of responsibility and an international vision, but also support the University’s internationalization drive by allowing more students to benefit from hostel life that fosters whole person development.

Also officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony were Mr Douglas So, Executive Director, Charities, The Hong Kong Jockey Club; Mr Patrick Yeung Kai-Cheung, Treasurer, the University Council; and Mr Patrick Ma Ching-Hang, Chairman, the University’s Institutional Advancement Committee.

Built on a site area of 1,700 square metres, construction floor area of 9,570 square metres, The Jockey Club New Hall is expected to be completed by the end of 2012. There are currently 6 student hostels on campus providing 1,500 residential places, and the academic block adjacent to the existing campus due to be completed at the end of 2011, will increase the number of residential places to 2,100.
