Lingnan University 50th Anniversary in Hong Kong Celebration Banquet

The Lingnan University 50th Anniversary in Hong Kong Celebration Banquet was held at the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 20 January 2018 (Saturday).

The Banquet, which is one of the signature events in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of its re-establishment in Hong Kong, was graced by the presence of The Hon Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as Guest of Honour and the attendance of about 1,400 guests including Lingnan University’s supporters and friends from different sectors, staff, alumni and students.

After the cake cutting ceremony joined by Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, The Hon C Y Leung, Former Chief Executive of the HKSAR, The Hon Bernard Charnwut Chan, Convenor of the Non-official Members of the Executive Council, Mr Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, Secretary for Education, Mr Carlson Tong, Chairman of the University Grants Committee, Mr Rex Auyeung Pak-kuen, Chairman of the Council of Lingnan University, Prof Leonard K Cheng, President of Lingnan University, Dr Lee Shiu and Dr Jennie Lee, Co-Chair of 50th Anniversary Honorary Fundraising Campaign Committee and other guests, the banquet featured a number of performances showing the long-standing solidarity and affection of the Lingnan family.  They include performances by the Lingnan Choir comprising about 130 students from all levels of Lingnan schools – day nurseries, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and university; a String Quintet formed by Lingnan University’s staff, alumni and students; and a Drum Show by the University’s alumni and students.

Success of the banquet was made possible by the generous support of many sponsors, including Diamond Sponsors Elite Partners CPA Limited, and Mr Ben Fok on behalf of the Fok Ying Tung Foundation, as well as Gold Sponsors Hopewell Holdings Limited and Mr Ben Wong Chung Mat.  Fundraising endeavours of the University during its 50th Anniversary celebration was conducted under the advice by the Lingnan University 50th Anniversary Honorary Fundraising Campaign Committee, with Dr Lee Shiu and Dr Jennie Lee as Co-Chair, Dr Ian Chan Yau-nam and Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Limited as Honorary Chairmen, Bright Future Charitable Foundation, Lingnan Education Organization Limited, Lingnan University Alumni Association (Hong Kong), and The S H Ho Foundation Limited as Honorary Advisors, and AR Charitable Foundation Limited and Lingnan Club as Honorary Patrons.

Lingnan University’s history can be dated back to 1888, when its forerunner, the Christian College in China, was founded in Guangzhou, and to 1967, when the institution, as Lingnan College, was re-established in Hong Kong.  In 1991, it became a degree-conferring tertiary institution funded by the “University and Polytechnic Grants Committee” and in 1999, it acquired university status and was renamed Lingnan University.
