Professor Qiu joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1993 as an Assistant Professor, later becoming an Associate Professor and then a Full Professor. He moved to The University of Hong Kong in January 2008 as a Full Professor before joining Lingnan in 2020.
Professor Qiu’s research covers a wide range of topics, focusing on industrial organisation, international trade, and foreign direct investment (FDI). In the field of industrial organisation, he is interested in issues such as R&D and M&As. In the field of international trade, he has studied the optimal design of strategic trade policies, the impacts of intellectual property right (IPR) protection on international trade, and the impacts of environment policies on technology transfer. In the field of FDI, he analyses cross-border M&As, strategic alliances, and technology transfers. Most of his recent research is related to China’s foreign trade and FDI. Having been published extensively in international journals and books, Professor Qiu has taught a variety of courses at all levels (undergraduate, MBA, EMBA, Ph.D., and executive training) and in many countries, including Hong Kong, China, and Portugal. Examples of his courses include globalisation, international trade and finance, China’s economy, and foreign trade and investment in China.
Professor Qiu’s research has received a number of research grants from the HKSAR Government. His two publications received the T. K. Ann International Trade Award in 2018 and 2020, respectively.
Professor Qiu has conducted several consultant projects for the HKSAR Government and Asia Development Bank. He is the Founding President of China Trade Research Group and was President of the Hong Kong Economic Association (2015–2019). He served as a Member of the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education of Hong Kong (2009–2011).
