Lingnan University had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Dr David P Chan and Lingnan Education Organization Limited (LEO) on 24 May 2018 for their generous support for the “LEO Dr. David P. Chan Data Science Undergraduate Programme”.

In view of the increasing importance of the application of data science in Hong Kong’s economy, Lingnan will establish the four-year self-financed Data Science Undergraduate Programme which highlights a balanced coverage of subjects in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Statistics/Mathematics, with a strong liberal arts foundation. This programme will enable students to master professional knowledge and develop their problem solving, critical thinking and communication skills, so that they will be capable to work in inter-disciplinary teams and different organisations in the future.

The new Bachelor of Science in Data Science Programme will be offered and managed by the Department of Computing and Decision Sciences, Faculty of Business, with the support from other departments and units, and will be launched in September 2019. Thirty students will be admitted in every intake to maintain a close relationship between staff and students for the best teaching and learning experience.

The self-financed four-year full-time programme will be supported by the funding from this generous donation and the University’s own reserves. It is expected to become UGC-funded within 4 years.
