The topping out ceremony of “Simon and Eleanor Kwok Building” was held on 30 November 2010. The new academic building has been named in appreciation of the generous donation of $20 million by Dr Simon Kwok Siu-ming, Chairman and CEO of SaSa International Holdings Limited and his wife Dr Eleanor Kwok in 2008 for the development of liberal arts education at the University.

At the ceremony, University Treasurer Mr Ben Wong said education plays an important role in society's development and provides a nurturing ground for future leaders. He thanked the donors for their gift, which has helped Lingnan to foster outstanding students in an excellent learning environment.

President Prof Chan Yuk-Shee thanked the donors for their staunch support and was glad to celebrate the topping out of the new academic building with them together. He said, “With the construction of the Simon and Eleanor Kwok Building, we shall have more study facilities on campus as well as a new teaching and learning environment for the Faculty of Business.”

With a firm belief in education as the cornerstone for society’s progress, Dr Kwok was glad that his donation has helped the University to move towards another milestone in its development. He said, “As an entrepreneur, I am sure Lingnan’s liberal arts education will nurture outstanding, caring and responsible citizens for society.”

Located adjacent to the existing campus and near Fu Tai Estate, the Simon and Eleanor Kwok Building is built on a 4,674-square metre site and has a gross floor area of 5,178 square metres. It is scheduled for completion in late 2011 and will be linked to the main campus by a pedestrian footbridge. The new academic block will provide lecture rooms, a computer laboratory and student activity areas. It adopts a number of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient features, such as automatic light switching, solar lighting, energy retrieval and rainwater collection for irrigation systems.

Officiating guests at the topping out ceremony included: Dr Simon Kwok Siu-ming; Dr Eleanor Kwok; Prof Chan Yuk-Shee, President of the University; Mr Ben Wong, Treasurer of the University; and Mr Patrick Ma Ching-hang, Chairman of the University’s Institutional Advancement Committee.
