The “Walking with Lingnanians” fundraising walkathon was held on 24 October 2010 on the Peak. Officiating guests of the kick-off ceremony for the walkathon included: Mr Michael Suen Ming-yeung, Secretary for Education; Mr Bernard Chan, Council Chairman of the University; Ms Sophia Kao, Deputy Council Chairman of the University; Mr Patrick Ma Ching-hang, Chairman of the University’s Institutional Advancement Committee; and Prof Chan Yuk-shee, President of the University.

Around 1,000 students, teachers, staff, alumni, Council members and friends of the University participated in the walkathon, enjoying the scenery while strolling from Harlech Road to Lugard Road. With the support of Lingnanians and friends, the walkathon has raised over $1.7 million for the University to strengthen its whole-person education. The amount will be counted in the University’s application for the Government’s 5th Matching Grant.

Mr Bernard Chan said, “Taking place outside Tuen Mun, the walkathon on the Peak has special significance to Lingnanians. I hope the event could help promote Lingnan University and its liberal arts education to more members of the community. I firmly believe that Lingnan University will continue to scale new heights and become the best liberal arts university in the region.”

President Prof Chan Yuk-Shee thanked Mr Suen for his participation. He said the University had raised funds to build a new student hostel this year, thereby achieving the target of full-residence in the 2012/13 academic year. He felt most heartened that the walkathon had received staunch support from Lingnanians and the community.

Souvenirs were presented to sponsors, top individual, family and group fundraisers as well as the team with the highest number of participants.
