The Department of English offers a three-year Honours Degree programme in Contemporary English Studies. The programme is based on the premise that in a liberal arts education for the next century, English Studies is of central importance for success. Our definition of English Studies embraces the study of Contemporary Literature in English, Applied Linguistic Studies and Language Studies. The Department teaches various forms of literary theory, especially those which draw upon theoretical linguistics. Other areas of departmental expertise include life writing and theories of metaphor. We recognise English as an international discourse, spoken on all continents, reflecting different - not merely British or North American - perspectives. The degree programme offers a curriculum that introduces the student to, and prepares the student for, English as a mode of thinking that is at once literary, linguistic and practical, in the context of "World English".
The Department has co-operated with foreign institutions, establishing a study abroad programme in summer semester as an international exchange Undeclared major. Take a look at our trips!
