Introduction

Cinema was introduced to Hong Kong by the end of 18th century. In the following 20 years, film exhibition was gradually introduced as a new business. Movie screenings, which were once regarded as a minor entertainment showing in gardens and opera theatres, became the major attraction. More movie theatres were then opened specifically for screenings. 
 
Most of the cinema houses were located in Sheung Wan and Central, the core district of Hong Kong's colonial administration. In this tour, we will visit those places where early theatres were built. Although most of them no longer exist, the tour will illustrate the history of film exhibition through our research materials and film examples.

  • Above tour schedule is subject to change due to circumstances. 

  • No walk-in participants will be accepted. 

  • There is no age limit for participants to take part in the activities. However, participants should consider their physical ability and decide whether they are suitable to take part in the activities. 

  • Please prepare enough drinking water, sunblock and rain gear, and wear suitable outdoor activity outfit. 

  • The tour will be suspended without prior notice when typhoon signal no. 3 or above, or any rainstorm signal is in effect 2 hours before the activity. Please check the weather condition before heading to the activity venue. 

  • Please take care of your personal belongings and do not leave your things unattended. Our staffs assume no liability and are not responsible for your loss. 

  • All devices borrowed for the tour should be returned to the staff once the tour ended. 

  • If any device borrowed is lost or damaged, the user will be charged the cost of replacement plus a processing fee of HKD$50 for each item. 

  • Staffs will take photo during the tour. The images will be used by the Centre for Cinema Studies to share about the tour and to publicize our next tour. Images may be used in our website and Facebook Page. If you would prefer not to be photographed, please speak to the staff or call 2616 7459.
